Mark Carey
Software user, linux user, engineer, legal owner of 8 nVidia GPUs, user of many more, disgusted by an unwillingness to release hardware specifications and work with faithful customers.
Interested listener that the reason the drivers are not open is due to patent concerns within the drivers.
Observer of patent trolls attacking both proprietary and open software.
Concerned owner who has paid the purchase price 7 times and while I use nVidia drivers with my purchased hardware I appear have a license to use the patented code but when I want to use the hardware with other drivers for some reason my license appears to vanish. With the license goes the powerful features of the hardware.
Market watcher who sees the competition (intel, amd/ati) working on and supporting open drivers. Do ABB produce transformers that can only be hooked up to proprietary cables? Do WEG produce electric motors that only take proprietary shaft keys? Do Electrolux vacuum cleaners only work in Sweden? Do Dunlop produce tyres that only work on Dunlop rims? But yet nVidia produce graphics hardware that only works in 3d with nVidia drivers.
Ability to integrate and reuse sells product, secret proprietary codes are rubbish, information wants to be free.
